Dos Santos ANS, de Barros MC, de Souza CSV et al. (2026). Safety Assessment and Hypoglycemic Effect of Moringa oleifera Lam. Seed Lectin (WSMoL) in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Mice.. Journal of applied toxicology : JAT.
This animal study investigated WSMoL, a lectin protein extracted from Moringa oleifera seeds, to evaluate both its safety profile and potential blood sugar-lowering effects in diabetic mice. A lectin is a type of protein that can bind to specific sugar molecules. Researchers first tested whether WSMoL caused toxic effects by giving Swiss mice different doses and monitoring them for harmful changes. They then induced diabetes in mice using alloxan, a chemical that damages insulin-producing cells, and tested whether WSMoL could lower blood sugar levels. The safety testing revealed some concerning findings: while WSMoL didn't cause death or obvious behavioral changes, it did reduce certain white blood cell counts and caused inflammatory changes in organs like the liver, spleen, and kidneys. However, the compound showed promising anti-diabetic effects, significantly reducing fasting blood glucose levels and improving glucose tolerance in both male and female diabetic mice. At the highest dose tested, WSMoL was as effective as insulin at lowering blood sugar. The researchers also found that WSMoL appeared to protect the liver and kidneys from damage caused by high blood sugar levels. This study suggests that while moringa seed lectin shows potential as a natural diabetes treatment, its use requires careful consideration due to possible immune system effects and organ inflammation.
