Researchers tested whether moringa seed extract enriched with isothiocyanates could reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes painful inflammation and ulcers in the colon. They used laboratory mice with chemically-induced colitis that mimicked both acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) forms of the human disease. The moringa extract was specifically enriched with moringa isothiocyanate-1 (MIC-1), a sulfur-containing compound believed to be responsible for many of moringa's anti-inflammatory effects. Mice received either moringa seed extract, a standard medication (5-ASA), or no treatment for comparison. The moringa extract significantly reduced disease severity scores and improved colon health markers in both acute and chronic colitis models. Treated mice showed longer colons (indicating less inflammation-related shrinkage), reduced inflammatory proteins like tumor necrosis factor-alpha and nitric oxide, and stronger intestinal barrier proteins that help prevent harmful substances from crossing the gut wall. The extract also increased production of detoxifying enzymes through the Nrf2 pathway, a cellular defense mechanism that helps protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. These results suggest that isothiocyanate-rich moringa seed extract works through multiple complementary mechanisms to reduce intestinal inflammation and may offer a natural approach for managing inflammatory bowel conditions.
