Sharma P, Tokas J, Bhuker A et al. (2026). Geographical variability in morphology and nutritional composition of Moringa oleifera seeds: a meta-analysis.. Frontiers in plant science.
This meta-analysis examined how the location where Moringa oleifera trees grow affects the nutritional content and physical characteristics of their seeds. Researchers analyzed data from 31 published studies to understand whether seeds from different geographical regions and climate zones have different nutritional profiles. The study focused on major nutrients like fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, ash, and moisture content, as well as physical traits like seed length and width. The researchers found that some nutrients varied dramatically between locations - crude fat, total carbohydrates, and crude protein showed the highest variability across different geographical regions. However, ash and moisture content remained relatively stable regardless of where the seeds were grown. Interestingly, despite this variation in nutritional content, the researchers could not establish a clear statistical relationship between geographical factors like latitude or climate zone and nutritional composition. The physical characteristics of seeds, such as length and width, also varied significantly between locations but showed no clear geographical pattern. This research is important because it helps explain why Moringa seeds from different suppliers or regions might have different nutritional values, which has implications for both commercial production and nutritional applications of Moringa products.
