Sonia Gómez‐Martínez, L. E. Díaz, Iván Vicente Vicente Castro et al. (2021). Moringa oleifera Leaf Supplementation as a Glycemic Control Strategy in Subjects with Prediabetes. Nutrients. doi:10.3390/nu14010057
Researchers conducted a 12-week clinical trial to test whether moringa leaf supplements could help people with prediabetes better control their blood sugar levels. Prediabetes is a condition where blood glucose levels are elevated but not yet high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes, affecting millions worldwide who face increased risk of developing full diabetes. The study involved 65 participants with prediabetes who were randomly assigned to receive either moringa leaf powder capsules or identical-looking placebo capsules daily. Neither participants nor researchers knew who was receiving which treatment until the study ended. The moringa group consumed 2400mg of dried moringa leaf powder daily for three months, while the control group took inactive placebo capsules. Blood tests measured fasting blood glucose (sugar levels after overnight fasting) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), which reflects average blood sugar over the previous 2-3 months. The results showed a clear divergence between groups: participants taking moringa experienced decreasing blood glucose and HbA1c levels, while those on placebo saw these markers increase over the same period. The researchers also examined gut bacteria composition and hormones that control appetite, but found no significant differences between groups in these measures. This study provides clinical evidence that moringa supplementation may help slow or prevent the progression from prediabetes to Type 2 diabetes.
